“Paper Surroundings: large format shibori-dyed washi”
June 2-19, 2011 at The Department Gallery, 1389 Dundas Street West, Toronto, ON M6J 1Y4
Gallery hours: Tuesday to Sunday 12-6pm. Opening reception: Thursday, June 2, 6-8pm
This exhibition consists of three large format pieces: two 6 x 14 ft wall-mounted and one 6 x 4 ft ceiling-hung. Each work consists of individually dyed paper modules. Although similar in nature, each module is unique. Together, they comprise a large, abstract landscape that surrounds the viewer. The patterns, not immediately identifiable as something we know, suggest a diversity of readings. They can evoke the familiar: ripples on the surface of water; light filtering through windows at night; stars in a far away firmament. But they remain abstract, and invite the viewer’s own interpretation.
This exhibition is part of "Living with Washi: Japanese Paper Inspiring Daily Life", a washi summit organized by the Japanese Paper Place. The exhibition is generously supported by the Ontario Arts Council.
